Dainichi Nyorai of the Womb Realm
Dainichi Nyorai / Radiant Heart of the Womb Realm
Letters that carry sound.
Light that carries life.

Letters that carry sound.
Light that carries life.
The bonji syllables A and On, written by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai (774–835), are rendered in gold leaf. Upon these letters of prayer, we have layered images of the beginning of life captured by scientific photographer Lennart Nilsson.
Ancient wisdom meets contemporary science. Through this encounter, we hope to offer a moment in which to feel the connection between our own lives and the greater universe. This work holds that wish.
The Resonance of A and On
We ask:
How did this universe begin?
Ancient wisdom smiles quietly at the question
and offers a single sound.
That sound is A.
The first breath from which all life arises, it is the root of all existence and the source of light.
When all was still in chaos, there was neither sound nor form; only the resonance of A, deep and gentle, filled that space.
Within this sound, Kūkai perceived the essence of the entire universe. He entrusted its resonance to Dainichi Nyorai as a form of prayer.
Dainichi Nyorai does not speak.
Yet within that silence,
the birth and death of stars, the rustling of plants, the heartbeat within a mother’s womb—
the rhythms of all life resonate.
Our own lives, too,
arise from the vibrations of this vast universe,
perhaps journeying toward a return to light.
And there is another sound: On.
A sound of beginning, it opens a door to the sacred resonance that fills the depths of the universe.
Found at the beginning of mantras and dhāraṇīs,
this sound gently opens the depths of our hearts,
resonating like a boat that tenderly guides the soul.
If A is the essence of the universe itself,
On is a key of prayer, allowing us to touch that essence once again.
When we voice this sound,
we gently open the inner universe of our small selves
and begin to resonate with a warm, greater presence.
Even if the world is now veiled in chaos, even amid uncertainty and suffering,
A is always within you.
On is the gentle voice that awakens that presence.
The light within you is the light of the universe itself.
Warm and enduring, it will never fade.
It is the irreplaceable, sacred proof
that you exist, alive in this world, here and now.
Feel&Sense

Into a space of prayer,
the light of life.
Presented during Kyoto World Culture Forum 2026 in the usually private Oku-shoin of Ninna-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site.
Ninna-ji is a temple with deep imperial ties, where Emperor Uda became the first head priest after entering Buddhist life. Successive members of the imperial family served as its head priests, and in the Heian and Kamakura periods it held the highest standing among monzeki temples. Shinzen, a disciple of Kūkai, officiated at the dedication of its original main hall.
In a space that carries more than a thousand years of prayer, the work and its resonance met the people gathered there.
