To the Beginning of Being — Kūkai’s Prayer and the Mandala of Life
To the Beginning of Being —
Kūkai’s Prayer and the Mandala of Life
Have you ever contemplated the very first moment of your life in this world?
Without sound or words, as though a single ray of light were entering,
life is quietly there.
This exhibition gives form to the invisible presence we call life:
a contemporary mandala bringing together the compassion of the Buddhas, the resonance of the universe and the mystery of human birth.
What it presents reaches beyond the categories of religion and science:
a deep attention to being, beyond the word “life” itself.
Bonji — characters that trace the voice of the universe.
Mandala — a map embodying the forms of compassion.
Photography of life — the primordial memory flowing through each of us.
Resonating and merging, they create a place of prayer that can arise only here and now.
To see is to feel.
To feel is to return deeply to yourself.
May the stillness and light filling this space meet the resonance of your own life
and gently awaken it.
The Womb Realm Mandala and Its Buddhas
The Womb Realm Mandala and Its Buddhas
A universe of compassion embracing life
A mandala is a map of a universe in which all life is connected and resonates together.
The Womb Realm Mandala expresses a world filled with compassion,
composed of figures who quietly awaken the light within us.
Dainichi Nyorai sits at its center, like a sun illuminating all things,
embracing every life without distinction.
The eight Buddhas and bodhisattvas surrounding this central figure
each embody a different form of wisdom and compassion.
In this exhibition, these sacred figures are layered with images documenting life’s unfolding:
fertilization, cell division and the formation of the embryo.
The visions of mandala and science intersect,
and a new universe emerges here and now.
This mandala invites more than observation.
It is conceived as a spiritual instrument, resonating with the depths of your soul and bringing invisible compassion into a space.
A space filled with the presence of the Buddhas becomes a place to live each day with prayer,
inviting stillness and inner strength.
Welcoming this mandala
expresses a choice to live with a universe of compassion:
a quiet commitment.
Bonji — Characters Giving Form to the Invisible Voice of the Universe
Bonji calligraphy traditionally attributed to Kūkai
returns across time as a prayer of light.
KUKAI
Bonji — characters giving form to the invisible voice of the universe
Bonji are more than symbols.
They are sacred characters created to make the presence of an invisible greater whole manifest in this world.
These ancient characters, which render the sounds of Sanskrit, hold more than phonetic records.
They symbolically contain the fundamental power of the universe and the spiritual essence of Buddhas and bodhisattvas.
Each bonji embodies a different sacred figure and resonates with the beings depicted in the mandala.
Those who chant and copy them have long been believed to enter into communion with that Buddha.
Kōbō Daishi Kūkai brought the teachings of esoteric Buddhism from Chang’an, the Tang capital,
and conveyed the depths of bonji to Japan.
Encountering Kūkai’s calligraphy, we sense in every stroke a flow of energy and spiritual rhythm beyond the movement of the brush.
These are lines that seem to carry life, extending beyond the category of writing.
A single bonji rises from the paper as a microcosm, holding the truth of the universe in concentrated form.
The bonji he left can be encountered as more than documents of Buddhist teaching: as mirrors into the depths of life,
perhaps to be felt as much as read.
In their presence, the heart can grow still and turn toward wisdom beyond words.
For us today, bonji remain a living presence.
In a time of uncertainty, their enduring resonance and form may offer an inner compass.
Each character drawn by Kūkai’s brush is a sacred form of prayer, resonating with heaven and earth and touching the depths of the heart.
Bonji remain quiet words of light, conveying life and stirring the soul.
Each character invites more than looking.
From the moment it enters your space, it becomes a place of prayer,
quietly resonating, day after day, with depths that words cannot reach.
To welcome bonji
is to live with the invisible voice of the universe.
The Mystery of Life
The Mystery of Life
Listening to the beginning of light
Every life holds an untold story of its beginning.
Its most delicate and sacred moments
are captured in Lennart Nilsson’s photographs of life.
An egg cell. A sperm entering it.
For us, the light born there reaches beyond a biological event:
a blessing from the universe, tracing the path of your existence in this world.
We see it as a sign of welcome from a greater wisdom beyond ourselves.
While grounded in a scientific record,
the work offers a silent message that speaks to the depths of the viewer’s soul.
To kindle a primordial memory of life in the everyday.
It is a prayer, a deep awareness,
preserving what matters,
remaining with you as a tangible reminder that you are alive, here and now.
One moment can change a world.
May this light of life connect
quietly with the core of your own being.

ART to SATORI brings together forms of prayer and scientific images of life through sound, light and space. As AI takes on more of the work of knowledge and expression, we revisit the question of our own worth. By encountering the beginning of our lives and feeling, through the body, the irreplaceable value of being alive here and now, we hope to nurture a connection with ourselves, with others and with the world. We offer this art as an experience for the times ahead.
